Immigrant Voices Featured Story: Kim Hey Soo

Korean bride Kim Hey Soo arrived in San Francisco, aboard S.S. China, 100 years ago on October 1, 1917. She had officially come to join her prospective husband in Dinuba, California, but she also dreamed of continuing her education in the U.S. Her father's wish was for her to follow a traditional path to marriage in Korea, but her mother was sympathetic to her daughter’s ambitions and arranged for her first-class passage to the U.S. without her father’s permission. Kim Hey Soo’s American story is one of loss, family and a lifelong devotion with her compatriots to the fight for independence of Korea from Japanese colonial rule.
